Grant Wallace Band
By This Time Tomorrow

Following their barn-burningly eclectic debut album, 2015’s Axle of the World (with Rabbit), Grant Wallace Band has taken a step back from their initial experimentalism. They’ve also dispersed geographically: vocalist Ben Hjertmann and pianist Luke Gullickson had left Chicago for North Carolina and New Mexico, respectively, and violist Chris Fisher-Lochhead was in his final weeks of Illinois residency after finishing his doctoral degree at Northwestern, when the band reassembled around their old north-side haunts in June 2016 to arrange and record this music. The result is GWB’s take on a straight-ahead, windows-down road trip album, in the proud tradition of Joni Mitchell’s Hejira, Jackson Browne’s Running on Empty, and Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska--complete with the band’s signature spiky chord progressions, three-part vocal harmonies, and “dangerously wry edge” (Chicago Classical Review).
